00100	(THIS SHOULD BE COMBINED WITH CONTRA.ESS)
00200
00300	TOWARDS A SOCIAL CONTRACT
00400
00500
00600 The object of this essay is to suggest that society would
00700	benefit from having a "social contract". This contract would
00800	regulate the way in which the benefits society has to offer are
00900	divided among groups and individuals. The purpose of the contract
01000	is to reduce strife by making a long term arrangement that would
01100	be universally recognized and would be rather difficult to change
01200	quickly. When a person undertook an occupation, he would have
01300	a good understanding of its rewards relative to others and would
01400	measure his talents against the rewards offered by the various
01500	occupations.
01600
01700 The social contract should take into account the following
01800	matters:
01900
02000 1. The desire for equality.
02100
02200 2. The necessity for stability against secession. No group
02300	should find it to its advantage to leave the society taking its share
02400	of wealth and set up separately. We shall imagine this to be possible,
02500	for example by emigration elsewhere in the solar system.
